SLAJ Postpones Yansaneh Lecture
- Saturday 28 July 2007.

A press release from the Sierra Leone Association of
Journalists(SLAJ) secretariat in Freetown states that today, Saturday July 28,
marks the second anniversary of the death of journalist Harry Hassan Yasaneh who
passed away in July 2005 at a private clinic in Kingtom, Freetown after he was
"mercilessly beaten up" by a gang of people instigated by a former Member of
Parliament, Dr. Fatmata Hassan.
The culprits, the organization says, have still not been charged
to court even after a judicial inquest found them culpable; and despite protests
from the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) and its local and
international partners.
"In remembrance of the death of our colleague, SLAJ had dedicated
this day to a series of events including a memorial lecture: “The Harry Yansaneh
Lecture”.
Last Year, the first memorial lecture was held at the Miata
Conference Hall where the Harry Yasaneh Trust Fund was launched," the release
explained.
The historic event, according to SLAJ, attracted a cross section
of the Freetown community including diplomats, heads of NGOs and Government
functionaries.
"SLAJ however regrets to inform its members and the public that
due to other pressing engagements, this year’s memorial lecture has been
postponed. A date will be announced after the August 11 elections.
SLAJ regrets any inconvenience this deferment might cause," the
release concluded.

Re: [Leonenet] slaj
But, of course, such a lecture will not bode well for BeLewa-Yodalaria a few days before the elections, since he and Kabbahlaria were responsible for Yansaneh's death.

Before SLAJ graduates to holding lectures they should invest in workshops on English Grammar, Essay Writing, and then to those members who show proficiency in these basic skills, offer more advanced workshops on writing styles (Argumentative, Expositionary, Advocacy, Technical, etc). The stuff written in a lot of SL newspapers does not rise to the standard of good Krio. And the print quality, in this digital age, is atrocious!
I'm basing my judgement here on the standard of newspapers in other countries in our sub-region. The first responsibility a orofessional organization such as SLAJ is to develop and enforce standards.

Hope you and Ngor Bob are doing fine. Please don't be too hard on some of us for our grammar. I personally don't take any pride in any level of proficiency in the "Queen's language" - written or spoken. I have to speak Creole/Ebonics/and Liberian English to earn a living and to survive. This is not to say that I will not make an effort to use standard English. I will.

Sam,
I am not sure I understand what you are wanting from a trade that is made up of people (for the most part) from schools that can only be as good as the teachers they attract. With so little investment being made in Sierra Leone's education sector, how do politicians hope to produce young people with basic skills needed to compete in a digital economy, contribute to the development of a productive workforce, and participate in the democratic process.
We seem to forget that holding a lecture that serves as a memorial for a journalist who died after being beaten by SLPP MP Famatta Hassan's children et al is as much a part of the democratic process as holding elections and circulating UNDT reports with names of GoSL representatives, UNDT members, TST Field Officers and independent consultants.

Funny how you missed it, Sam. And how a veteran SLPP member got it: gonzo journalism is actively encouraged by this SLPP administration when it suits its purpose, and standards are slapped on everybody else.

But, of course, such a lecture will not bode well for BeLewa-Yodalaria a few days before the elections, since he and Kabbahlaria were responsible for Yansaneh's death.

SLAJ Postpones Yansaneh Lecture - Saturday 28 July 2007. A press release from the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists(SLAJ) secretariat in Freetown states that today, Saturday July 28, marks the second anniversary of the death of journalist Harry Hassan Yasaneh who passed away in July 2005 at a private clinic in Kingtom, Freetown after he was "mercilessly beaten up" by a gang of people instigated by a former Member of Parliament, Dr. Fatmata Hassan.
The culprits, the organization says, have still not been charged to court even after a judicial inquest found them culpable; and despite protests from the Sierra Leone Association of
Journalists (SLAJ) and its local and international partners.
"In remembrance of the death of our colleague, SLAJ had dedicated this day to a series of events including a memorial lecture: ³The Harry Yansaneh Lecture².
Last Year, the first memorial lecture was held at the Miata Conference Hall where the Harry Yasaneh Trust Fund was launched," the release explained.
The historic event, according to SLAJ, attracted a cross section of the Freetown community including diplomats, heads of NGOs and Government functionaries.
"SLAJ however regrets to inform its members and the public that due to other pressing engagements, this year¹s memorial lecture has been postponed. A date will be announced after the August 11 elections.
SLAJ regrets any inconvenience this deferment might cause," the release concluded.

AKB,
I consider this non-political in the sense that one would expect a medical doctor to know how to read blood pressure and an engineer to be able to do basic math. For obvious non-political (mortal) reasons we should not tolerate civil engineers who cannot compute forces? Why should we tolerate journalists who have not learned their tenses? The qualified journalists should either train the pretenders or purge their ranks of them.
It's a very simple standard: if you intend to pass yourself off as a professional in a field, at least learn the rudiments of that trade. Which raises the question of how one qualifies to be a member of SLAJ.

O.K., Manja Zoker, only oyinbo/muzungu educated Afrikan geniuses should be privileged (based on your call, privy) to "lectures."
And just imagine that we Afikan-centered academics, after many years of empirical investigations, are advocating that it is about time that Western-trained "intellectuals" learn from the "uncertificated" Afrikans, if our epistemology and ontology are to be relevant and effective in the Afrikan cause!!!

You are still missing the wood for the trees. Lifelong learning, which is essential for those with intermediate skills, needs an educational structure that emphasizes basic education. Talk to school leavers in Sierra Leone and ask them what is wrong with the school system.
Then talk to educators and public policy makers in the Association for the Development of Education in Africa and they tell you that education, like everything else in Sierra Leone and the rest of Africa, suffers from underdevelopment. That underdevelopment reflects in low level teacher training. And that is for a profession that is not preferred in most African countries.
Sierra Leone's schools and colleges like many universities in Africa are in a very bad state. If they weren't, I'm sure you'll consider sending your college-bound children to FBC or Njala.
How can schools and universities provide quality
teaching against the backdrop of enormous deprivation --no blackboards, no water, no electricity, no capacity and lots of child abuse. How realistic is it to talk about information and communication technology when this SLPP administration --how many engineers are in the cabinet -- has not provided every school in Sierra Leone with connectivity? Five years ago, I spoke to an engineering professor at my old university, FBC, who lamented that professors were not providing skills training. He reiterated what many African educators are saying: they are trying to teach students as if their institutions are well endowed and equipped.

Training is being done, but some of the editors themselves need
training. Also, the bad grammar guys you mentioned are usually happy to
collect tiny salaries or no salary at all. For a lot of them, a press card is a
status symbol and meal ticket used to extort money from corrupt Borbor Bellehs
and to carry out character assassinations for a fee. Most of the qualified
and competent journalists are working for the UN or local NGOs or have simply
left the country or pushed out by the politicians.

PS: You will amazed by the grammar of some of the current Salone
English teachers. Request the honour of sitting in one of their classes.

AKB,
Oh well, everything for you is political. I'm not politician. We
have the worst newspapers in quality of grammar, style and print in the
sub-region. Shouldn't that bother SLAJ and your national pride?

Manja Zoker, your statement is not only a generalization, it is also
condescending in the true Burkian sense.

Before SLAJ
graduates to holding lectures they should invest in workshops on
English Grammar, Essay Writing, and then to those members who show
proficiency in these basic skills, offer more advanced workshops on
writing styles (Argumentative, Expositionary, Advocacy, Technical,

standard of good Krio. And the print quality, in this digital age, is
atrocious!
I'm basing my judgement here on the standard of
newspapers in other countries in our sub-region. The first
responsibility a orofessional organization such as SLAJ is to develop
and enforce standards.

But, of course,
such a lecture will not bode well for BeLewa-Yodalaria a few days
before the elections, since he and Kabbahlaria were responsible for
Yansaneh's death.

SLAJ Postpones Yansaneh Lecture - Saturday 28 July 2007. A press release from the Sierra
Leone Association of Journalists(SLAJ) secretariat in Freetown
states that today, Saturday July 28, marks the second anniversary
of the death of journalist Harry Hassan Yasaneh who passed away in
July 2005 at a private clinic in Kingtom, Freetown after he was
"mercilessly beaten up" by a gang of people instigated by a former
Member of Parliament, Dr. Fatmata Hassan.
The culprits,
the organization says, have still not been charged to court even
after a judicial inquest found them culpable; and despite protests
from the Sierra Leone Association of Journalists (SLAJ) and its
local and international partners.
"In remembrance of the
death of our colleague, SLAJ had dedicated this day to a series of
events including a memorial lecture: ³The Harry Yansaneh Lecture².
Last Year, the first memorial lecture was held at the
Miata Conference Hall where the Harry Yasaneh Trust Fund was
launched," the release explained.
The historic event,
according to SLAJ, attracted a cross section of the Freetown
community including diplomats, heads of NGOs and Government
functionaries.
"SLAJ however regrets to inform its members
and the public that due to other pressing engagements, this year¹s
memorial lecture has been postponed. A date will be announced
after the August 11 elections.
SLAJ regrets any
inconvenience this deferment might cause," the release concluded.
