gibs:
I appreciate your humorous reference to part of what I have long
referred to, in utmost seriousness, as the twin test for the validity of
any proposition. Those, like you, who are familiar with my writings over
the past decade would recognize my apparently famous test as comprised
of the following key questions: First, is the proposition logical? If
so, is it factual?
Only if the answers to both questions are in the affirmative can the
proposition be considered valid. Otherwise, it fails the test of
validity and, therefore, must not be treated seriously.
This is why, as you know, I have consistently advised some of our
compatriots who have made claims of fact without simultaneously setting
forth relevant evidence to support them, that they do themselves and the
rest of us no good. In particular, they indulge in unseriousness, at
best, or defamation, at worst, if those allegations entailed negative
claims about someone's character or reputation.
Which brings us to the key claims of Mr. Daboh that our friend, Amadu,
so brilliantly analyzed, as you duly pointed out, namely.
"In the first instance, the leadership of Charles Margai is troubling. I
have come to the conclusion, based on what I have seen and heard of his
leadership style, that he cannot make a good president. He has
demonstrated a tendency to be autocratic, intolerant and probably just
as corrupt a leader as those now in power at the moment."
The obvious question I would ask Mr. Daboh, as you correctly predicted,
is: Where is the evidence?
Indeed, it should have been very easy for Mr. Daboh to provide any such
evidence of Mr. Margai's allegedly poor leadership style. This is
because, as Mr. Daboh helpfully tells us, he has been an eyewitness to
Mr. Margai's "autocratic" and other "tendencies" that are allegedly
similar to those of the corrupt current leadership Mr. Margai wishes to
replace in the impending presidential election.
So, why does Mr. Daboh not simply share such alleged evidence with his
readers so that they can judge for themselves -- rather than relying on
Mr. Daboh's mere allegation thereof -- whether Mr. Margai, in fact, is
"autocratic, intolerant and probably just as corrupt a leader as those
now in power at the moment?"
As our perennially patriotic friend, Amadu, accurately noted, the
allegations made by Mr. Daboh against a potential president of our
country are extremely serious -- if they are true. By failing to duly
set forth any relevant evidence upon which his readers may judge for
themselves whether his serious allegations are true or not, Mr. Daboh,
unfortunately, reduces his allegations to the level of unseriousness, at
best, and defamation of Mr. Margai, at worst.
If Mr. Daboh is unaware of his implacable obligation to adduce relevant
evidence whenever he makes a claim of fact, he may belatedly correct his
omission by now setting forth the missing evidence.
His continuing failure to do so will raise serious questions about his
motivation. It will also guarantee that sober readers will not take him
seriously -- a great pity for our country and our needlessly long
sufferring people should he turn out to be right in his evaluation of
one of our presidential candidate's character and fitness for the
position of president of SL.
Best regards,
Moh'm
