According to the APA news agency in Dakar, Mali’s Constitutional
Court on Sunday confirmed eight nominations for the April presidential
election.
The National Union for the Republic (UNRP) candidate, Modibo
Sangare, was rejected for allegedly not paying the 10 million CFA franc-bond as
a prerequisite.
Other prerequisites include the sponsorship of at least 10 MPs or
five communal advisers per region and in the district of Bamako that will give a
total of 45 elected officials.
First to have filed his nomination last 23 March, President Amadou
Toumani Toure was nominated by 414 communal advisers against 17 MPs for Ibrahim
Boubacar Keita, second to have filed his documents.
Mamadou Blaise Sangaré of CDS (Social Democrat Convention) was
supported by 11 MPs while Tiebile Drame of PARENA (National Renewal Party) got
87 communal advisers.
Soumeylou Boubeye Maiga of "Convergences 2007" was proposed by 115
communal advisers.
Oumar Mariko of the SADI (African Solidarity for Development and
Integration) got the backing of 71 communal advisers.
The only female candidate, Sidibe Aminata Diallo of the REDD
(Gathering for Education to sustainable development) was proposed by 14 MPs.
Madiassa Maguiraga of the PPP-Jama Jigi (People’s Progress Party)
gathered the signature of 55 communal advisers.
Malian citizens had up to 12 midnight to challenge the published
list, noted the doyen of the nine-member Constitutional Court, Abdoulaye Sekou
Sow, who exceptionally chaired the hearing in the absence of chairman Salif
Kanoute.
